The origin of honeymoons date back to the 5th century when newlywed couples would drink mead, a honey-based alcohol, after their first “moon” together as a married couple. The mead was a gift from guests, and it was believed to have aphrodisiac properties to help with conception.

Newlyweds going away together on a holiday trip originated in early 19th century England. Upper-class couples would take a “bridal tour”, sometimes accompanied by friends or family, to visit relatives who had not been able to attend the wedding. The practice soon spread to the European continent.
Honeymoons in the modern sense—a holiday voyage undertaken by the couple—became widespread during the Belle Époque, as one of the first instances of modern mass tourism.
The average honeymoon costs about $4000.00.
