Kentucky Derby

46491F43-9173-4688-979D-35A57E1F916CMeriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) started the Kentucky Derby in 1875, making it the longest running sporting event in the US. His uncles John and Henry Churchill donated the land, hence Churchill Downs. In 1931, the Kentucky Derby was permanently moved to the first Saturday in May to position it well for the Triple Crown races. Its rich tradition has become an American icon.
