“Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.”
2 Corinthians 10:12-13 ESV
Our identity is our distinguishing character or personality. Indeed, it is who we really are. With all the social pressures to mold us into someone that fits someone else’s desires, it is no wonder we have so many identity issues. As I look back over my life, I think that perhaps I would have been more of the real me in a musical career. While I had the opportunity to play several musical instruments growing up, no one rewarded that behavior like they rewarded academics. Now I have trained so long and hard in my profession and given up the best years of musical development. I try not to be resentful of my past so I move forward full steam, but always mindful of my identity. I believe that we need to allow our youth to become their true selves by allowing them to seek their true identity, the one God gave them.
