Smokey Bear is the American advertising icon created by the U.S. Forest Service, commemorating a bear born in 1950 in New Mexico that was rescued from the Capitan Gap Fire. It has become the longest-running public service advertising campaign in United States history, promoting the prevention of unplanned outdoor fire.
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. It is not the same as Mexican Independence Day.
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more than in Mexico, thanks to advertising campaigns by beer and wine companies. As a result, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Super Bowl.
Common sense is the sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts. We commonly say that common sense is not common, and I often ponder why not. Perhaps we rely upon the opinion of others instead of being critical thinkers ourselves. Our education system and our media rich world constantly bombard us with bits of information, often aimed at influencing us to change our opinion/behavior. Whenever l read “news” on the internet, I try to read the comments because more often than not, the comments give a more realistic view.
