There is so much mental illness in our world. It struck me today as I saw mentally ill people throughout the course of my day, and mostly they are not receiving adequate treatment, for one reason or another. Often I wonder how such bizarre behavior stays out of the spotlight. Have we become so afraid of being politically incorrect that we tolerate it instead of trying to help fix it?

Loneliness

Loneliness is an unpleasant emotional response to isolation. One may feel anxious about a lack of connection or communication with other beings. Loneliness can even be felt when surrounded by other people. Many of us suffer from loneliness at one time or another, but we need to remember that we are never alone—God is with us always!

Fear of Flying

In 1987, I experienced a “near air disaster” with extreme turbulence. Since then, I have had varying degrees of anxiety when flying, yet I have continued to travel worldwide on numerous flights. Cognitively I understand that flying is about 750 times safer than driving. But when the rough air rocks my world, anxious feelings invade my thoughts. Last night was one of those flights with turbulence from start to finish. Deep breaths and remembering that fear is a liar kept me calm enough to endure the moment. How do you deal with your fears?

Rest

Rest
Sometimes I just cannot seem to get enough rest and I feel exhausted. It may be easy to refrain from physical activity, but it is often difficult to relax the mind…so I lay still, but keep thinking and worrying about all sorts of things. What seems to help me most is to count my blessings. That reminds me Who is in charge and how much He loves us. His Peace provides true rest.

 

Stress

1AAF07B4-93E0-4F61-87B3-016C7F41055FStress is universal—we all experience it. And not all stress is bad. It may help us prepare for challenges ahead and warn us of dangers. But, in excess, it can adversely affect our health in multiple ways, even leading to our demise. As a physician, stress is all around me and it seems to attack me when I am most vulnerable. How we deal with stress is critical for our well being. I pray and exercise and meditate and talk to friends to deal with mine. What are your biggest stresses and how  do you cope with them?
