Jubilation Day

Jubilation Day
Most of us fear death. One of my patients this week expressed this fear very directly and solemnly. Even though I am an oncologist, hearing her caused me to pause and remember what is most important in life is Faith and knowing that indeed fear is not from God. Death for the righteous shall be Jubilation Day.

Wisdom

B24E5C11-A8B1-451B-9046-0F9D2B146234“And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore,”
‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭4:29‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Inspired by my maternal grandmother Sarah (my daughter, the creator of the art on this BLOG, is her namesake), when asked as a small child what I wanted to be, I would say a Thinker! At that point in my life, I knew nothing of The Thinker (French: Le Penseur), the bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin. (One of my favorite art pieces and featured in one of my favorite movies, Midnight in Paris) My grandmother would tell me about the wisdom of Solomon and I longed to be a wise man. Sometimes I don’t make the best decisions, but I have learned that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Proverbs‬ ‭9:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬.

Fear of Flying

In 1987, I experienced a “near air disaster” with extreme turbulence. Since then, I have had varying degrees of anxiety when flying, yet I have continued to travel worldwide on numerous flights. Cognitively I understand that flying is about 750 times safer than driving. But when the rough air rocks my world, anxious feelings invade my thoughts. Last night was one of those flights with turbulence from start to finish. Deep breaths and remembering that fear is a liar kept me calm enough to endure the moment. How do you deal with your fears?

Our Wedding

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Tomorrow (12/22/2018), Sheridan and I will be married. Our story began when she, a news reporter, interviewed me as the first Radiation Oncologist in a new Cancer Center. Soon thereafter, we serendipitously met at a fundraiser and talked all day. Somehow we did not start dating then because we misread each other’s interest. Our paths diverged for 9 years, and then we reconnected on LinkedIn and our journey together began 2 years ago. We have traveled the World and shared so many precious memories already; but, God willing, we are just beginning. Yesterday, my sister informed me that my maternal grandparents were married on December 22, 1925–that and the Full Moon tomorrow—good signs🙏

Leap of Faith

Sometimes our minds cannot figure it out and we must accept things without all the facts. Actually we take such steps everyday, but when the stakes are high, we feel the pressure of uncertainty. To overcome these times, it indeed takes Faith.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬
