Rock Star
All my life I have loved music and have a reasonable talent for it. In elementary school, I started playing tenor saxophone and recorder. During middle school I took piano lessons and continued to play saxophone. I even dabbled with the flute and piccolo. Then in high school I played tenor and alto sax, placing 6th in the all state band. My college years had me playing in the pep band and the symphonic band. The pinnacle of my music career was filling in for The Red Skelton Band’s baritone saxophone player. Unfortunately my medical career was not very compatible with music, though I still sing karaoke. I often wonder if I could have made it in the music industry if my family had supported me.

But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.”

Identity

Our identity is our distinguishing character or personality.  Indeed, it is who we really are. With all the social pressures to mold us into someone that fits someone else’s desires, it is no wonder we have so many identity issues.  As I look back over my life, I think that perhaps I would have been more of the real me in a musical career.  While I had the opportunity to play several musical instruments growing up, no one rewarded that behavior like they rewarded academics.  Now I have trained so long and hard in my profession and given up the best years of musical development.  I try not to be resentful of my past so I move forward full steam, but always mindful of my identity.  I believe that we need to allow our youth to become their true selves by allowing them to seek their true identity, the one God gave them.
