Mother’s Day
Our modern Mother’s Day started in the US in the early twentieth century and is a day set aside to recognize and honor all mothers. But the essence of honoring one’s mother was displayed by the young man in the above painting. He was celebrating his high school graduation at the beach where he ultimately gave his life while saving his mother from drowning. My daughter painted his portrait and presented it to his mother the following Mother’s Day. Truly he honored his mother with the ultimate sacrifice.

March 12 is my mother’s birthday. Today I honor her in Heaven for sacrificing so much for me and for loving me enough to make me fiercely independent. There are so many precious memories, but one stands out above all other. My older brother died of melanoma at age 24 just 3 weeks before Christmas and my mother, along with my father, made sure that Christmas was extra special for everyone else. That kind of courage and love defined my mother and I am indeed thankful.

During President Bush’s funeral today, the word honorable came to mind and seemed to sum up this man’s character. He was a member of the great generation and leaves us with great respect and admiration.
In contrast, I recall a recent court experience where the judge was called honorable, but the synonyms listed above certainly did not apply. This judge accepted the position of honor, but failed to assume the responsibilities of fulfilling that expectation. In a nutshell, that summarizes most of our society’s problems.
