Natural Beauty

Natural Beauty

Our society advocates for external appearance and outward signs of whatever happens to be in style. While I believe we should all look and act our best, it seems we have become too obsessed with image and not appreciative of natural beauty. Surrounding us is a naturally beautiful world full of awesome natural miracles. When we pause to enjoy this natural beauty, we begin to see the world a little more clearly and accept the beauty that abounds throughout God’s creation. And it will help us view beauty from a deeper perspective.

‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Vanity

One of my favorite movies is The Devil’s Advocate.  In it, Al Pacino, portraying the devil, states that vanity is his favorite sin.  Our culture has promoted “beauty” to the point that we often lose focus on what is most important. Social media has become our “reality”, which can be beautified to portray “perfect” lives. Apparently this perfect life facade has left many people feeling inadequate in their real lives, resulting in depression and suicide.  In addition, over the last few years, there have been hundreds of deaths from accidents relating to taking selfies.  In the past week, a young female model fell off a cliff in Australia trying to catch that perfect pic.  While looking one’s best is clearly beneficial, there must be a higher priority placed on one’s inner self.  That inner beauty is always more attractive ultimately.

Beauty

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As a nation, we are often focused on personal appearance. And certainly looking one’s best is important; but, deeper beauty comes from within one’s heart and soul. We should put as much time and effort into inner beauty as we do on external appearance. I believe that would change our culture far more positively than all the luster on the outside.
