December

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

December

December is always an exciting month. It brings winter and Christmas, as well as a break from school and work for some. This year it is the last month before the start of the twenties. I am so hopeful that this new decade will bring positive changes in our world. Obviously we cannot predict the future, but we can trust that God will keep His Promises.

Home

Growing up monetarily poor seemed a severe disadvantage to me. I remember not making the basketball team because my athletic shoes were the 2 dollar ones with slick soles that slid like ice skates on the polished gymnasium floors, instead of the 20 dollar Converse ones that could turn on a dime. It is hard to compete when you are slipping on the floor while trying to play. Likewise, our home was an old farm house that my father had renovated. It literally had honey bees living in the walls and snow blowing around the window frames accumulating beside our beds. There were 8 of us living in 3 bedrooms, with one recently acquired indoor toilet. Our heat was wood initially, but replaced by fuel oil heaters that sat in the kitchen and living room downstairs. While our material wealth was below today’s poverty level, we always had plenty of good food raised and prepared by our parents. Most importantly, we knew that our parents always had our best interests in mind and they sacrificed what little they had to help us be all that we could be. From these meager beginnings, I received the most rich blessings and I believe that background has taught me to persevere through all circumstances. The life lesson that I have passed on to my children is always do what is right, always do your best, and trust in God.

Abide in me, and I in You

‭‭John‬ ‭15:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Today I had a brief health issue that required minor intervention; yet, it reminded me of my own limitations—my mortality as a human. We sometimes forget how each day is a blessing that we can’t take for granted. Our entire life is dependent on His grace and yet we fail to trust in Him under all circumstances. When we focus on Him and abide in Him, and allow Him to abide in us, our true selves will bear our best fruits and we can experience joy beyond all understanding.

Even a Rose has to Blossom

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Even a Rose has to Blossom

One of the lessons I have learned in life is that it takes time to get the results one wants. We learn patience when we do not get what we want in our time. Just think—even a Rose has to blossom and that takes time. In our self centered world, we want everything we want immediately. Often, the best things only come with hard work, perseverance and patience. We must keep our eyes on the prize. As I always have told my children, “Do your best, do what’s right and trust in God.”

Thick Skin

One definition of thick skin is the ability to keep from getting upset or offended by things other people say and do. It may be especially difficult when these people are our family and loved ones. But we should always focus on God and do our best and do what is right. Truly this is our greatest freedom from a fallen world. Our self centered society depends on trying to please everyone and on blaming someone for everything; when in reality, that is impossible.
