When my brother died at age 24 in 1973, I remember my grandmother saying, “Never to have suffered means never to have been blessed.” That was a hard message to hear then and one that still can be difficult to understand. Through the years, I have come to realize that it is the tough times that allow us to appreciate the good ones. As I contemplate this situation, I try to focus on the fact that God sees all of us, living and dead, the same. Our mortal minds cannot possibly comprehend the infinite wisdom of our Creator. Today at work, an atheist stated that he only believes in the facts of science. As a scientist myself who sees the many associated shortcomings of the scientific world, I paused and thanked God for my wisdom to know all the blessings He has bestowed upon me.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34:8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The natural world itself is evidence of God. He has created it and it is good indeed. As a scientist by training, I realize that humans can never fully understand His ways. We cannot create a single living cell and we struggle to combat many of nature’s forces; yet, many do not believe and arrogantly think that humans can learn to control everything. Over time, God has blessed us with much knowledge and certainly major strides have been made in many of our professions; but, He is still in control and we need to gain that wisdom. He will continue to pour out His Love because He loves us and wants us to enjoy His goodness.

My dogma comes from The Bible. Many seek to tear it apart, claiming that it is contradictory and full of errors. In my life, I have found that most of these people have not studied The Bible, not even reading a single version of the Bible. For the past 10 years, I have read many versions and studied it through various sources.(unfortunately I cannot understand the original languages) My efforts have lead me to much wisdom and understanding, but far from where I hope to be. Indeed there are many truths within this great book and I believe it is The Word of God. One of my favorite movies is Devil’s Advocate and it portrays our legal system in a way that parallels what is happening in many of our courts. As a scientist and physician, I question everything, so I encourage others to do the same. Don’t accept anything as dogma until you have thoroughly investigated, but don’t discount anything without that same level of scrutiny.

Higher Learning

Higher Learning

The new school year is underway and all the fall activities are expanding our already full schedules. My college fraternity brothers are planning a reunion at one of our home football games and the nostalgia is clawing at my soul. One of them replied that he was coming “while he was still able” and that struck a chord with me. Those college years were indeed more than over priced books and mundane courses—they were a time for gaining wisdom and understanding, and forming deep relationships that would endure the trials of a lifetime. While I think our educational system needs reform, the true value of higher learning is indeed priceless.

Old Age

There are many terms to describe people of older age: elderly, geriatric, senior citizen, golden years, etc.
What exact age is old is somewhat arbitrary and depends on one’s perspective. In our general population, we do not have proper respect for our elderly, in my opinion. We tend to focus on our youth and discard our seniors. But the essence of the elderly is wisdom—they have lots of experience and could offer extremely helpful advice. I have always enjoyed the elderly and have learned much from them.

‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭4:29‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Inspired by my maternal grandmother Sarah (my daughter, the creator of the art on this BLOG, is her namesake), when asked as a small child what I wanted to be, I would say a Thinker! At that point in my life, I knew nothing of The Thinker (French: Le Penseur), the bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin. (One of my favorite art pieces and featured in one of my favorite movies, Midnight in Paris) My grandmother would tell me about the wisdom of Solomon and I longed to be a wise man. Sometimes I don’t make the best decisions, but I have learned that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Proverbs‬ ‭9:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬.

The Vine

‭‭John‬ ‭15:5‬ ‭ASV‬‬
The Vine
Growing up I remember my sister saying that what is in you comes out when squeezed—our real selves have to be tested in order to know who we really are. And the fruit we bear is dependent on who we are. Wow, many years later, I am just beginning to understand all the meanings behind that truth.
